If you make tapered tangs on your knives or have wanted to, simply stretch the plans and make a 15" flat platen with ease. Can use KMG toolbar arms.

As for the cost savings, light-duty grinders/belt sanders show up on craigslist and yard sales fairly regularly at a reasonable cost. I have two 1"x42" sanders I picked up for $25 each. I also picked up a 4"x48" edge sander for $100. The heavy-duty 6"x48" units come along less frequently, but There are two for sale locally just now.

All in, anyone with a drill press, sander and some hand tools can build a top of the line variable speed 2x72" grinder for about $1,000 and a person can build one much cheaper if some of the metal/parts/motor, etc. are already in the garage.

I'm not a knifemaker and I don't do a ton of metal work so I could never justify the costs of buying one to myself. But what if it's a project for a video?
