I have an Amadeal XJ12-300 mill (Sieg X2 clone-ish)and am going to make a belt drive conversion kit. I'm not going to take the easy route and get one from the USA, the postage costs are too prohibitive, so I'm going to make one to my own design, albeit based on the plans which are readily available on the internet.

Drive to wherever you have to get a fullsize mill. You won't be happy until you do. A mini mill is a toy. I drove from Houston, TX to St louis,Mo 13 hours one way to get my mill for 900$ off ebay. Keep hunting Ps I spent about $250 in gas then at least $1500 in tooling so the mill was the cheap part.

The bearing spacer acts as a lower flange, so it's not an issue. To align the pulley, I chucked the bearing spacer, put slow CA adhesive on the pulley. Then used the tailstock of the mill to press the two together and provide alignment. Once it set, I drilled and tapped the four screw holes that secure the pulley.

The new drive belt is a 4L290, as I happen to have 3 of them on hand. I only had to buy 2 parts in addition to the bandsaw itself for this project. The first was the small pulley that is mounted on shaft of the gear reduction drive. I purchased a 2 3/4″ dia pulley with a 3/4″ bore at my local tractor supply store.

I was at the only specialised store in my area and held in my hands the T5 and HTD 5M pulleys and belts. The T5 have a huge tooth clearance. I estimate the backlash to maybe 0.5mm. I will be using a small timing belt to connect the 890 OZ/in stepper motor to the lead screws. This will be time consuming to manufacture from scratch but I can use different size pulleys to get a 2:1 ratio this will give me more torque for heavy cuts. I found the perfect belt at auto value and now I am machining the toothed pulleys from scratch.

The small pulley has a 9 mm bore with a 3 mm keyway. The large pulley has a 30 mm bore with a 5 mm keyway. If your shafts don't match these values, then this belt drive will not fit your mill. Nice- Original 2 step V belt motor pulley for a 10" Atlas or 12" Craftsman lathe. Pulley has 1/2" bore. Set screw is a bit tight in pulley. Stamped with part number 9-428. Large pulley diameter is 4 7/16" Small diameter is 1 15/16" The width at the top of the V groove is 1/2" wide, the base of the V groove is 3/16" wide. In fine order, as shown.

We had three basic design constraints: 1. can it be made using a lathe or mill itself prior to the conversion and 2. low-cost and 3. relatively easy to make. Since turning v-belt pulleys takes some skill (especially if working with a smaller lathe like the 7×12 or even the 8×12), we wondered if we could use timing belt pulleys instead.
