After grinding a hollow the front half was flattened in under 10 mins on a quite slow diamond plate You can probably see how scratching from a diamond plate stops somewhere at half the blade length. I'm not suggesting anyone should hollow grind their chisels. But if you want to mess around here's some pointers.

It just removes the majority of material, making it 10 times easier, with much less heat when doing the flats, than if I were to start without the hollow grinding. Making any sense ? Keep the edge and the heel of the hollow grind on the stone and you have very little metal to remove. You can hone quite a few times before the hollow is gone and grinding is necessary. Sharpening should not require spending big money.
