The $99 that I plunked down on the 4X36" would have payed for most of the 2hp motor that I got used. I also got things in stages. First I got the motor for my grinder. Several months later I was able to get enough together to get my Coote grinder and I was lucky enough to find a stand that I could use at Amazon for $18.

The Coote belt grinder gets my vote as the most machine for the money. It comes without a motor. With some luck, a suitable motor can be found for a fraction of the cost of a machine with a motor installed. The Coote 2-inch-by-72-inch grinder with a 10-inch contact wheel is around $400.

I probably overstated my complaint. I don't think it's any more difficult than any other PM steel of its hardness and wear resistance. I have looked into Grizzly and Coote grinders, and the Coote ones seem better from what I have heard. Does what belt size you get (2x48 vs. 2x72) matter all that much? How much does contact wheel size matter (I'm not planning on doing much if any hollow grinding)? How difficult or expensive is it to rig up the right motor?

The pulleys they were asking about $40-50 each for ($90 total). So add about $175 to get it to your door with pulleys. Then you buy some adjustable v-belt for $30-40 and a motor. I'd say when it's all said and done, you're probably going to be around $900 (maybe cheaper if you get a cheaper motor).
