We later learned that due to water penetration and mechanical parts reaching the end of their life, plus a large sinkhole, it was no longer safe to visit the black powder roll mill or its neighbors. In the early 1800's the duPont family had a flourishing black powder business here employing hundreds of mostly Irish workers.

Daniel Shields and a 1909 graining mill explosion. The son of a DuPont charcoal house employee, Daniel Shields was born in the Upper Banks in 1894. Shields worked on the DuPont Company farm as a boy, and from 1912 to 1929 he worked at the Green & Flinn lumber and coal yard in Greenville, often delivering lumber to the powder yards.
