A jig holds the workpiece and also guides the cutter. Given CNC, there's little need for jigs as the g-code guides the cutter, so the term is largely related to manual machining. "Fixtures" are colloquially workholding solutions that are custom made for a particular part or situation.

I've got a number of square-end end mills that have chipped corners. I'm planning to make an end mill sharpening jig similar to Harold Hall's but also want to extend the life of the end mills. I've read that rounding the corners of an end mill can extend their life, but I'm not sure how to do it and not screw up the cutting action.

Find a piece of flat spring in your scrap box to replace the original metal retainer. I also ran an end-mill down the vee and converted it into a half round and it gave the stem a much snugger fit. It does not wobble now. I lengthened the square bar in the body of the jig by welding a similar sized square bar from a door lock to it.

I'm thinking of making the end mill flute sharpening jig in one of Harold Halls books and in it he calls for using cast iron for the bearings. Everywhere else he suggests using 230M07 ( I think that is what he called for) which I think is a free machining steel. I'm wondering why he suggests cast iron for the bearings.

You can make up your own stones by glueing them to a bar, or using lapping film (this is where the PSA is useful), but I just use the Lansky stones right from the standard set. Even though I now have his rest and his more complex end mill sharpening jig (the one that does the flutes as well as the ends) I will continue to use the above end mill sharpener for the doing the ends. It is set up all the time and very easy to use. It also does a great job IMHO. The above pics show the first wheel I had on the grinder.

The carbide inserts used in the Ultra-Shear Pen Mill-Ci are the same ones they use in their turning tools, AND they are compatible with EWT Square Ci2-Ci (0.44" Square), and Rockler S1. I think they are cheaper from Woodpeckers, at $14.99 each, than they are from EWT.

Prior to the Mini-T, I had not been able to make a really satisfactory D bit. Countersinks are also feasible. End mills have been a problem for me. The picture shows a new 2 flute end mill (with some of the protection still adhering); the primary clearance angle is marked "1", secondary clearance is marked "2" and the third clearance is marked "3".

The machine is capable of just about every sharpening function you could imagine from 10" saw blades to 1/8" end mills. It will let you sharpen most cutter tools if you have the right jig. I have most of them except for a radius accessory and the planer knife holder.

The basic TINKER T&C Grinding Jig is terrific for sharpening the end of end mills and slot drills. This operation is easy to learn to do well, and can be done very quickly. In my opinion, even if all you want to do with it is to sharpen end mills and slot drills, this capability alone would justify building a TINKER.

2) mill-drill, and 3) knee mill. I started with and did a lot of great work on the minimill, over a 7 year period. It is a dovetail column, which is very valuable. It took a lot of modifications to make it as useful as it was, so off the self, not quite there. If I were doing it again, I would get a larger version of the dovetail column mill.

Sharpening the teeth of slot drills and end mills is handled using the Brooks work head - no additional jigs are needed for this. To set up for use, the wheel is swiveled about 5° clockwise (seen from above) and lowered so the cutter will touch only at the outer (right) edge of the wheel at wheel center height(see picture).

Make adjustments to the legs of the jig according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Place the legs in the V rest and turn the grinder on. Swing the jig into place next to the grinding wheel and gently apply the pressure. Sharpening turning tools is going to take a little practice to get it right.
